We have teamed up with Liam Urwin, better known as cupcake to his training partners and professors, in his journey to Worlds 2023. We have known Cupcake for years, local legend in the sunny coast Jiu Jitsu community, this young guy is incredible.
We chatted to him about his Jiu Jitsu journey
When did you start training BJJ?
I started training in December of 2017
What’s your Club History?
I’ve always trained and competed under Cia Paulista Australia. I started training at Terra Luta BJJ and only recently moved to Melbourne to continue training at CPA HQ and Maribyrnong. Along with coaching at Art of training, a CPA affiliate in Baccus Marsh.
Who are your Significant Teachers?
Rex Carney is my coach and has graded me from White- Brown (and hopefully Black someday). I also train under Carlos Viera, Carlos has been guiding my training this past six months and is watching over my worlds prep.
When did you know Jiu Jitsu was your life?
I don’t think I’ve had the lightbulb moment, it’s something that happens slowly. At the end of last year I began coaching and training full time, that was a big shift, to actually be living off BJJ.
What are your goals/dreams with Jiu Jitsu?
My goals in Jiu Jitsu haven’t changed much. I just want to keep getting better, I have an idea in my head of where I’d like my jiu jitsu to be. Im no where near that yet, so for now I’m gonna keep training.
Why do you love Jiu Jitsu so much?
I think Jiu Jitsu is a great vehicle for personal development. It teaches a lot of lessons that you can take off the mat. Not to mention the potential for constant improvement. There aren’t many things in life (especially as an adult) that you can continue to get better at, I think this is what keeps us all coming back. The promise of getting a little bit better each session.
How are you feeling leading up to Gi worlds 2023?
Fucking pumped! After suffering the worst injury of my bjj “career” at the end of last year it took me a while to feel 100% again. But now with that behind me I’m feeling sharp and ready to have some fun out there.
Who is the person in your bracket you most need to beat?
Myself
Finally, in your own words, please sum up your experience so far of Alchemical products.
I couldn’t be happier with the alchemical products I’ve been using. The rash guards are warm and super comfortable. Comfortable is probably the word that sticks in my mind when thinking about alchemical gear. The Gi’s are soft and durable. I can’t recommend them enough. 21/10
