Why Hemp? The Natural Fibre Behind Our Rash Guards

The Problem With Polyester

Most rash guards are made from polyester and spandex, which are synthetic fabrics, essentially plastic. Any breathability in a synthetic comes from an open weave, not the fibre itself. Once the fabric sits against your skin, it creates a plastic layer that holds moisture instead of moving it.

What Natural Fibres Do Differently

Hemp and organic cotton are naturally absorbent, thanks to the porous structure of the fibres themselves. Moisture moves through the fabric rather than pooling against your skin.

  • Breathable — airflow comes from the fibre, not just the weave
  • Actually moisture wicking — porous fibres actively draw sweat away
  • Soft — comfortable from the first session
  • Durable — our garments have been through machine washing on hot cycles and sun and surf sessions and bounced back every time
  • Non-toxic — no plastic layer against your skin
  • OEKO-TEX® certified — independently tested for harmful substances

Our Fabric

Every OG Hemp Rash Guard is made from 28% hemp, 67% organic cotton, 5% spandex. The spandex provides stretch and recovery for training movement, while the hemp and organic cotton deliver the breathability and comfort. Alchemical is the original provider of hemp rash guards in the world.

Fit

Our rash guards are designed for an athletic, close-to-body fit suited to BJJ. Sizing runs from XXS to XXL.

Care

Hemp is a super-fibre. We have put our garments through their paces, including machine washing on hot cycles and wearing them in the sun and surf, and they have bounced back every time. For optimal longevity:

  • Wash once before first wear
  • Wash inside out on a cold cycle at the lowest spin speed
  • Avoid bleach, soaking and fabric softener
  • Wash with similar colours
  • Avoid tumble drying, or use low heat only
  • Reshape while damp
  • Hang dry in the shade
  • Do not iron
